This opportunity is in the Actuarial Services Department.

Our Actuarial department is a dynamic group of professionals focusing on pricing, reserving, and data analysis for all written lines of business. The actuarial team creates, maintains and updates pricing models for underwriters to utilize; creates reserving estimates for all lines of business and assists with financial- and claims-related items, helping the organization to succeed using our insurance and modeling expertise. We aim to improve practices and efficiency across the organization, while using data to the fullest potential to gain insights that help our underwriting and management teams meet our goals.

Role Description:

In the role of Senior Data Analyst, you will be part of a team responsible for building and maintaining reserving models. In this newly created role, you will work closely with the Reserving Team, and Chief Reserving Actuary to maintain, extract, and analyze data and much more. By applying your technical and analytical skills to improve our data processing and models used by the Reserving Team you will positively impact Safety National as we seek to set aside reserves for future claims, thus ensuring the long-term stability of the company.

Your primary responsibility as a Senior Data Analyst will include supporting members of the Reserving Team, as they fulfill their day-to-day responsibilities as well as special projects. You will do so by assisting them in extracting data, reviewing it, designing insightful reports, and leveraging your critical thinking skills to provide meaningful analyses and summaries of the data. You will also design and prepare computer models as well as, prepare informational reports for senior managers concerning profitability, market trends, and company financial condition.

In addition to working within the Actuarial Department, you will work with the Information Technology, Claims, Underwriting, and Finance departments, to gain better understanding of our data and participate in detailed reviews of the data in order to identify trends, measure changes, and create tools for use by the Reserving Team. An additional role you will fulfill is that of serving as the department’s data steward, which will require you to working closely with our Information Technology department to identify data issues and ensure all business reporting issues are resolved and data needs are satisfied.

This role requires strong SQL skills including writing new queries and programming experience in either Python or R. The ideal candidate is highly technical with experience in Snowflake and Power BI and has prior experience working in the actuarial field or insurance industry.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Math, Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science or similar

Required Qualifications:

  • Professional experience with SQL including writing new complex queries
  • Professional programming experience in Python and/or R
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Strong professional communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Snowflake
  • Prior professional experience creating reports or dashboards, preferably using Power BI
  • Prior experience working in actuarial field and/or insurance industry
  • Experience in a data analyst or similar role
  • Advanced Excel knowledge including VBA programming, macros and writing moderately complex formulas
