Data Analyst, Spatial job description

A Spatial Data Analyst (SDA) gathers health and demographic data and presents it in reports or on maps. The SDA works for the Project Director in the Fordham-Bronx Park neighborhoods of the Bronx, NY, and serves as the principal data engineer and metric expert on the project team. The SDA will be expected to work with the team to identify gaps in communication, health, and service of the high-equity needs of community members.

The successful candidate must foster an atmosphere of inclusion and respect for all community members and coworkers. Within the office and community, you will act to promote cultural competence through your actions and work to provide services, referrals, and information to community members. To do this, you will be expected to work through the dual lens of health equity and trauma-informed care. The successful candidate must also be client-focused and willing to travel as needed.

Essential Job Functions

  • Develop relationships with community members, elected officials, community-based organizations, and others who share a passion to improve health equity in the Bronx.
  • Work with team to assess and ensure equity in messaging and events through the effectiveness of various media posts and collateral
  • use a combination of computer and mathematical skills to develop applications and programs that can gather geospatial data
  • work on developing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) that can be used for analysis and reports of key health equity needs and services rendered
  • determine the cultural, linguistic, health equity, and community needs of the project, and then create programs or systems that will ensure program data integrity
  • create algorithms for processing spatial data for effective reporting and discovery of opportunities to address gaps in health equity or the influential variables thereof
  • train other staff, and through the community, to analyze GIS systems, reports, and data that may be leveraged to address local health disparities
  • analyze broad data sets and provide actionable insights to better inform business decisions
  • Work with the communications lead to analyze available deliverables data with an interest in decreasing barriers and maximizing community uptake of services and resources provided by ReServe
  • participate as a member of cross-functional squads that includes finance, field reporting, human resources, and business customers
  • gather requirements from different business units, translate to engineering problems, and explain the results to non-technical teammates
  • develop and maintain inventory systems, metric reports, and data visualizations
  • collaborate closely with staff and business stakeholders to guarantee proper implementation of tracking and reporting
  • maintain and re-engineer existing ETLs to increase data accuracy, data stability, and pipeline performance

Education And Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in geography, computer science, or equivalent
  • Minimum of 2 years’ data analyst experience through Excel and GIS software and systems required
  • Demonstrable skills in:
  • teamwork: to collaborate between business professionals, city agencies, and internally to determine project goals.
  • analysis: effectively process data and identify how existing systems can be improved to meet needs.
  • problem-solving: devise systems or forms of technology that can provide more accurate or effective data
  • teaching: to train employees to assist with processing systems.
  • Technology skills, including
  • experience with Microsoft Excel, GIS systems, Connecteam, Apple OS frameworks, and data mining required
  • use of a personal computer (PC and Mac preferred)
  • use of mobile devices: iPhone, iPad, laptop/tablet devices
  • use of the Internet for supervision and daily work
  • use of cloud-based technology; preference for Google Suite experience.
  • Preference for experience in community organizing, public health, or other allied fields.

Supervisory Responsibility

Work collaboratively with ReServe leadership to effectively supervise other data analysts.

Work Environment

Assignments in this job may include operation in a field environment in all 5 boroughs of New York City, requiring routine walking, ascending stairs, using elevators, using public transportation (bus, subway), etc.
