Position Summary
The Data Analyst in Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies performs technical and professional work in support of the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in both operations and functions and provides the Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and the Provost with data and data analysis essential for informed decision-making through comprehensive data analysis and reporting to understand and improve graduate programs and the graduate student experience at Rice, with training by and in collaboration with the Office of Institutional Research and the Data Warehouse team. This position develops and maintains internal publications and presentations; designs, formats, and compiles data required for developing and producing specialty reports; and formulates responses to general data requests from internal and external stakeholders.
The ideal candidate should be a good listener, able to discern the questions asked that can be addressed with existing and non-existing data. To be creative and eager to learn both the culture of graduate study and the data tools. They must be patient, organized, detail-oriented, self-critical, and comfortable pivoting based on emerging needs; possess logical, solid, and quantitative skills, with the ability to grasp and explain the academic context behind the data; and display excellent written/verbal communication and organizational skills.
This position is initially on-campus, with the opportunity to be hybrid (2 days from home) after three months. It must be Texas-based. Per Rice policy 440 , work arrangements may be subject to change.
Requirements
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Two years of related experience
- In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education above and beyond what is required may be substituted on an equivalent year-for-year basis.
Skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, demanding environment
- Proficient in Microsoft Office products (Access and Excel), business intelligence software such as Tableau, and statistical software such as SPSS, SAS, and/or R
- Proven quantitative and qualitative research skills
- Work under limited supervision and follow through on assignments
- Seek and incorporate iterative feedback on work product
- Collaborate and be effective in working with diverse populations and with all constituencies of Rice
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
- Exhibit organizational skills and be detail-oriented
- Think critically and creatively, have a high standard of integrity, and be motivated to incorporate and model best practices into the organizational culture
- Ability to collect, organize, analyze, interpret, identify relevant trends, and present information in a meaningful manner using large datasets and databases
- Present a wide range of data visually for diverse audiences
Preferences
- Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field
- Experience working for an academic institution with institutional data
- Familiarity with academic cloud tools such as Technolutions’ Slate, Banner, and Oracle ERP Cloud
- Experience building APIs to connect data sources to cloud tools and dashboards
What we offer
This is a full-time benefits-eligible position in a prominent, central administrative office with a pay range of $63,100 - $80,000, depending on experience and qualifications. *Exempt (salaried) positions under FLSA are not eligible for overtime.
