Data Analyst job description

As a Data Analyst, team members use analytical, technical, and organizational skills to respond to requests from external and internal stakeholders. With guidance from senior team members, the Data Analyst extracts and aggregates data to create reports containing descriptive analyses of Curriculum Associates’ educational assessment data at the national, state or district level.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

Use information from internal and external stakeholders to fulfill requests for data reports and analyses. Develop SQL queries to efficiently extract and aggregate data from large relational databases. Leverage and modify existing code to generate reports that meet educator needs. Develop code to extract, filter, manipulate, aggregate and format data. Identify the “story” behind student data in response to educator questions and concerns. With support and guidance from senior team members, write clear and understandable internal- and educator-facing responses to inquiries based on analytical findings. Create and maintain technical documentation for analytic procedures in tools like Confluence and GitHub. Develop and maintain an understanding of Curriculum Associates’ product offerings. Manage multiple tasks while maintaining a high level of attention to detail.

Data Analysts with a focus on state work will work closely with the Government Relations team to obtain specifications for state contracts and will extract large student-level files designed to meet state-specified formatting and business rules.

Data Analyst job requirements

Required job skills:

  • Excellent problem solving and analytical capability, with high attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ideally with experience communicating complex technical topics to lay audiences.
  • SQL coding skills including the ability to efficiently pull and aggregate data from large relational databases.
  • Ability to write code in one or more programming languages (SAS preferred) to extract, filter, manipulate, aggregate and format data.
  • Ability to convey complex, technical information in tangible and meaningful ways primarily through writing.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities as needs shift or customer issues arise.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with a focus on collaboration and teamwork.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks with competing timelines.
  • Commitment to improving the learning of all students through research-based practices, including students who are part of demographic groups that have been historically marginalized, students who receive special education services, students who are English learners, and striving students who are not yet on grade-level.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least one year of applied experience in data analytics querying large databases, or a combination of education and experience in a related field that proves competency in the requirements of the job.
  • Applied experience coding in SQL, writing queries to join multiple tables within a large relational database.
  • Must be able to provide writing samples.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in relevant field, and experience in or familiarity with the field of education.
  • Proficiency working with one or more programming languages (SAS preferred).
  • Experience in the field of education, especially the current national K-12 curriculum and assessment landscape.
  • Savvy about data visualization, report organization, educator needs, and education market needs.
  • Knowledge of educational measurement principles, including familiarity with psychometric concepts such as measurement error, validity, and reliability estimation.

Travel: <20%

Pay Range – This role’s range is $60,750 - $99,750. The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that Curriculum Associates considers in making compensation decisions based on our Compensation Philosophy. Actual base pay within that range will vary based upon several factors including, but not limited to, prior experience and relevant skill sets. At Curriculum Associates, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances for each case. This role is also eligible to participate in the company bonus plan. The Company recognizes that minimum wage varies by location and will ensure all compensation decisions comply with applicable state and local laws.
