Lead Data Analyst job description

In the Retirement Products division at Edward Jones, you’ll focus on driving the strategy to secure retirement for tens of millions of people. Your work will identify and drive business opportunities in products, services, support, and experiences for clients and branches. Through thought leadership, analytics, and cross-functional collaboration, you'll rally internal and external stakeholders around delivering strategic priorities to grow the Retirement business.

Responsibility Summary:

  • Collaborate with the team to develop and execute the firm's IRA/Retirement strategy to ensure branch teams have quality products and support needed to help clients achieve their financial goals.
  • Proactively identify opportunities with medium to broad impact where analytics can inform the IRA/Retirement business. Provide actionable insights to support business outcomes and long-term strategy development, primarily by performing root cause, exploratory, sensitivity and scenario analysis, hypothesis testing, economic modeling, regression, and data visualization to identify patterns/trends/insights etc. on ambiguous business problems.
  • Serve as data steward for the IRA/Retirement business.
  • Merge, cleanse and transform complex data from multiple sources as needed for analysis. Develop advanced logic to structure datasets for analysis.
  • Apply critical thinking to pressure test and validate logic and outputs against known sources and understanding of business. Proactively identify data quality issues and collaborate with other subject matter experts to identify solutions.
  • Generate and incorporate insights into a cohesive story that clearly addresses business questions and influences decision making. Effectively lead the creation and communication of tailored messages to influence senior leaders regarding analytic ideas, approach, key takeaways and actionable insights.
  • Understand and apply intermediate to advanced statistical concepts.
  • Create and maintain business performance dashboards.
  • Consult on data and analytic requirements for database development and system changes.
  • Educate senior and executive leaders across the firm on analytical concepts and best practices.
  • Actively participate in industry and trade data and analytic communities in order to bring fresh ideas to the organization.
  • Serve as a technical and functional data subject matter expert across a wide range of areas and have a solid knowledge on data relationship and flows including product, client, marketing, compliance, branch, etc.
  • Support execution of IRA initiatives including related product/service partner relationships in order to:
  • Help shape and execute business plans that align with firm strategic direction.
  • Ensure that product literature and branch support is effective (quantity and quality), aligned with key firm messages and compliant.
  • Collaborate on the design and development of integrated platforms, systems, tools and processes that create a better client and branch team experience,
  • Regularly interface with cross divisional partners in service, operations, legal, compliance, government relations, etc.
  • Support regulatory and legislative initiatives (eg. SECURE Act, DOL, etc.),
  • Leads certain additional responsibilities specific to the team or area (Eg. recruiting, training, product partner coordination, wholesaler effectiveness).
  • Participate in broad division, firm or industry initiatives and events as needed to represent the product line in alignment with firm strategy (Eg. cross divisional-projects, internal committees, product partner events, regional events, industry groups, etc.).
Lead Data Analyst job requirements

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor's Degree with an emphasis in business, economics, math, engineering, or analytics preferred.
  • Series 7, 66 required within 12 months of hire.
  • Progress toward advanced degree or relevant industry designation(s) preferred (e.g. CFP, CFA, etc.).

Years of Experience:

  • 7-10 years' experience in relevant field.
  • 7+ years of analytics experience required.
  • 5+ years of relevant financial services, analytical, or consulting experience preferred.

Functional Knowledge:

  • Broad knowledge of product line products.
  • Proven technical aptitude and analytical skills.
  • Highly collaborative.
  • Solid written, verbal and presentation skills.
  • Regarded as the technical expert in their job discipline within the organization; Requires in-depth and/or breadth of expertise in own job discipline and broad knowledge of other job disciplines within the organization function Advanced experience interacting with various database and file storage systems (DB2, IDMS, Oracle, Hadoop, NoSQL).
  • Advanced experience with data manipulation languages such as SQL, Impala, PL/SQL, Hive, Pig, XML required. Advanced knowledge of statistical concepts and analytic techniques, including descriptive statistics, forecasting, economic modeling, various regression techniques, matching learning techniques, exploratory analysis, and variance analysis required.
  • Experience with statistical tools such as SAS, SPSS, R, or Python preferred.
  • Experience using Microsoft Excel, including use of pivot tables, formulas, macros, vba, charts/graphs.
  • Proficient with visualization tools such as Tableau, PowerBi, or MicroStrategy.
  • Exceptional analytical, critical and systems thinking required.
  • Ability to research industry best practices and apply to work. Actively identify need for, participate in, and/or take leadership role in communities of practice or user groups
