GENERAL PURPOSE

The Business Data Analyst is an individual who possesses a deep understanding of business requirements gathering and can effectively translate requirements into technical specifications and logical designs. The person in this role can use a variety of technologies to understand how data is generated, transformed, and utilized across different systems. They are capable of articulating business domains and extracting the core functions and requirements from a set of tasks or projects. Moreover, they possess the ability to understand business processes and the role of data in supporting those processes. Additionally, they are adept at examining systems to establish logical connections between data and business processes, as well as proficient in conducting root cause analyses.

Essential Functions

These essential functions are primary job duties that incumbents must be able to perform unassisted or with some reasonable accommodation.

  • Partners with stakeholders, process specialists, and users to elicit, vet, and document business processes and requirements.
  • Analyzes data using advanced SQL query language using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio and Azure Data Explorer.
  • Conducts domain analyses and produces logical and conceptual models from the analysis.
  • Understands and describes dataflows based on SSIS, Azure Data Factory, Power BI Service, etc.
  • Understands the dataflows from source to consumption.
  • Partners with business teams to define and document business requirements for new metrics and reports.
  • Identifies and analyzes errors and inconsistencies with data housed in source systems and proposes resolutions; uncovers root causes of data issues.
  • Creates written communication materials that effectively summarize findings and support recommendations.
  • Creates ad hoc reports and views on a frequent basis to assist management in understanding, researching, and analyzing issues.
  • Teaches and advocates the use of data tools such as Collibra to the business units.
  • Advises on which data is most important to the various business units, thus prioritizing its inclusion into lakes, warehouses, and other data products.
  • Advises opportunities ripe for exploration, documenting the requirements and ensuring a smooth handoff to project teams.

Specific Skills Required

  • Advanced analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Advanced, working knowledge of Transaction SQL.
  • Proven ability to quickly learn new applications, processes, and procedures.
  • Able and willing to collaborate in a team environment and exercise independent judgment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Expertise with data collection, storage, and abstraction (modeling).
  • Knowledge of database concepts and best practices.
  • Working proficiency with MS Power BI.

Education And Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or related discipline, or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum two years of experience in business intelligence, data analytics, or data engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience in effective requirements gathering.
  • Demonstrated experience mapping data to desired business outcomes.
