Job Description & Responsibilities
The Academic Data Analyst supports institutional effectiveness and assessment efforts to enhance University programs, processes, services, and outcomes in support of the University’s mission. This role leverages database query languages/tools, analyzes data, and creates dashboards to support leaders to make informed decisions, allocate resources, and optimize processes.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Uses database query languages and tools to retrieve, examine, evaluate, combine, and manipulate data from multiple sources.
- Performs business analysis using techniques such as statistical analysis, explanatory and predictive modeling, and data mining to create reports used for operational and executive decision making.
- Utilizes data integration tools to automate data extraction, transformation, and storage to deliver reports and dashboards.
- Identifies and resolves data conflicts including data quality and data integration issues.
- Evaluates data sets and identifies new data sources: determines patterns, synthesizes data into meaningful metrics and numbers, monitors data quality, and identifies inconsistencies.
- Analyzes data, draws conclusions, and develops recommendations to optimize business processes and performance.
- Prepares written reports and presents model results, analysis outcomes and implications in a variety of formats (e.g., Power BI dashboards, Excel spreadsheet, Power Point presentations) and to different audiences within the University.

- Proficient in database query languages and tools to retrieve data
- Demonstrated ability to build Power BI Dashboards
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to communicate effectively across levels internally and with external business partners.
- Ability to build strong cross-functional relationships.
- Advanced knowledge of industry-standard analytical tools such as SAS, SPSS, SQL, Microsoft Access, and Excel.
- Knowledge of data warehousing terminology and design.
- Attention to detail and the ability to organize information effectively.
- Ability to effectively manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Possess a curious mindset with an eagerness to learn and adapt to new concepts and processes.
- Strong work ethic and ability to execute key deliverables reliably and dependably.
Work Experience
Minimum 3 years of experience in database query languages, analyzing data, and/or education
Education
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in IT, Statistics, Data Science, Marketing, Finance, or another quantitative relevant field required. Advanced degree from an accredited institution preferred.
Other
Must be able to travel occasionally should a business need arise. For most roles travel would not be common. Travel may involve plane, car or metro. In accordance with ADA policies, reasonable accommodations regarding travel limitations can be provided. Travel will be more common for roles such as Account Executives (25 - 50%), senior leaders (10 – 20%) or Capella Core Faculty (5 – 10%).
- Ability to work onsite in Corporate or Campus location (in a typical office environment) may be required based on role. If so, this would include being mobile within the office, including movement from floor-to-floor using elevators or stairs.
- If offsite or hybrid role, must have access to work in setting which enables meeting all requirements of the role (including privacy, reliable internet access, phone, ability to video conference, etc.) at a remote location.
- Faculty and Federal Work Study roles require access to work in setting which enables meeting all requirements of the role (including computer, privacy, reliable internet access, phone, ability to video conference, etc.) at a remote location.
