The Salary Guide Q1 update, Interview with C. G. Lambert, Data analyst job market summary

Article Updated:

Hi everyone, happy Tuesday!

DataAnalyst.com has now been live for just over a year, and we've brought over 2,000 hand curated data analyst jobs onto the site - all of them including a salary range.

There's now over 4,400 of you currently subscribed to the newsletter, and I can't thank you enough for your support and for joining us on the journey.

Before we jump in - I've made a change in the email marketing provider, going the self-hosted route. Around the same time, there was a new domain authentication requirement set by Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Microsoft mails, for those who send large scale email campaigns, that I've completely missed.

This unfortunately resulted in the March newsletter not really being delivered to those who subscribed, and it may also result in you receiving this particular email, twice.

Lesson learnt - where it comes to emails, going self-hosted is one way to ensure mail deliverability issues. So, my apologies to those who haven't received the newsletter, and to all of you who receive this particular email twice.

Now, there are 3 things I'd like to share with you today.

  1. The Data Analyst Salary Guide - Q1 update
  2. Day in the Life of a Data Analyst with C. G. Lambert, author of the book Adventures in Analytics: A Guide to Getting Ahead in Your Analytics Career
  3. April 2024, Data Analyst job market summary

Hope you enjoy the read, and as always - please do share your ideas, thoughts and/or if you run across more bugs on the site.

If you've applied to a job and are in the interview process, wishing you good luck and please let me know how it goes!

Thank you,

Alex

P.S: I'm currently looking for data analysts open to share their career journey, so if you're up for an email based interview, please just hit reply, write couple of words about yourself and we'll organise something - would love to get you featured and share your experience with over 4,400 of our readers!

1. Data Analyst Salary Guide - Q1 update

With approximately 2,000+ data analyst jobs listed on the site up to this date, we analyze data to develop data analyst salary guide.

The Salary Guide has now been updated and published to include data for Q1 2024.

You can find the data analyst salary breakdown, by these areas:

Industry - breakdown by specific industry, overall minimum, maximum, median and average salary + salary breakdown by years of experience

Years of experience - breakdown of all jobs on the site by years of experience - entry level (0 - 3 years), senior (3 - 5 years), lead (5+ years)

State - this is where it gets tricky. Now, as it usually is with this kind of exercise, lumping the data all together you come up with an insane range.

On the other hand, if you split the data in 52 different ways, you'll get a whole different set of issues where N is not large enough to draw any conclusions - and for some states, there's simply no data at all (not to single any state out, but I'm looking at you, Wyoming).

Company view - on each company page, we include average data analyst salaries at all the companies that are listed on the site.

As the site grows, and the number of jobs on the site increases, I believe that I'll be able to bring an addition source of information about salaries, complimenting those already available on other sites.

Curious how your salary compares? Check out the latest update of our data analyst salary guide.

2. Day in a life of a Data Analyst with C. G. Lambert

Another interview from our series has been published earlier this week. In these interviews, we aim to share stories and experiences about the route to becoming a data analyst, keeping up with the skillset, recommendations to aspiring data analysts and much more.

We spoke with C. G. Lambert, who's the author of the book Adventures in Analytics: A Guide to Getting Ahead in Your Analytics Career.

Chris walks us through his career journey - from starting in the banking sector, moving onto a developer role, and then finding his footing in the data analytics space. He quickly rose through the ranks, from a business analyst role, into more senior and leadership data manager positions, eventually starting up his own portfolio of companies.

He shares why learning where the Analytics role fits into the business is really important, as it will help you establish just how you are going to show that you are driving business value and justify your salary, your bonus and any promotion opportunities:

"It is easy to focus on technical excellence. To do the courses. To collect trainings. Showing these certificates on your CV can be seen as progress to being a good Analyst. And to a certain extent that is necessary. You need to be able to use the tools. But if I can leave readers with one piece of advice it would be this: focus on actual business impact.

Learn the business. Sit with your stakeholders. Speak their language. Find out their pain points. And learn about the dollar impact of any of the pieces of work that you’ve done. And put those in the CV.

That shows people that you have a strong focus on how your work is used and how it improves the business."

It's a fascinating interview, where we also touch on the Question of the Year: Wondering if AI/Chat GPT is a threat to data analysts?

Thank you Chris for taking the time to share your your journey, thoughts and advice with our readers, about growing one's career in the data analytics space.

Make sure you read the full interview, it's absolutely worth it.
