Article Updated:

Hi everyone, happy hump day!

First of all, I'd like to wish all of you a very Happy New Year, and all the very best in 2024!

Secondly, a huge thanks to all of you who took the time and helped fill the end of the year survey, that I'm looking to use as insights to improve DataAnalyst.com in the upcoming year.

DataAnalyst.com has now been live for just over a year, and we've brought over 1,660 hand curated data analyst jobs onto the site - all of them including a salary range.

There's now over 2,500 of you currently subscribed to the newsletter, and I can't thank you enough for your support and for joining us on the journey.

Now, there are 3 things I'd like to share with you today.

  1. We have analyzed a full year worth of data and updated our Salary Guide
  2. Full Year 2023 review
  3. December 2023, Data Analyst job market summary

Hope you enjoy the read, and as always - please do share your ideas, thoughts and/or if you run across more bugs on the site.

If you've applied to a job and are in the interview process, wishing you good luck and please let me know how it goes!

Thank you,

Alex

P.S: I'm currently looking for data analysts open to share their career journey, so if you're up for an email based interview, please just hit reply, write couple of words about yourself and we'll organise something - would love to get you featured and share your experience with over 2,500 of our readers!

1. The Data Analyst Salary Guide update

With approximately 1,650+ data analyst jobs listed on the site up to this date, we analyzed all job opportunities on the site to update the salary guide - now including data for the whole 2023.

On the high level, based on years of experience we're looking at these average values (remember, these will also vary depending on location):

- entry level data analyst salary being at $84,949
- senior data analyst salary at $104,075; and
- lead data analyst salary commanding $124,997 per year.

You can browse through the full data analyst salary breakdown, by these areas:

Industry - breakdown by specific industry, overall minimum, maximum, median and average salary + salary breakdown by years of experience

Years of experience - breakdown of all jobs on the site by years of experience - entry level (0 - 3 years), senior (3 - 5 years), lead (5+ years)

State - this is where it gets tricky. Now, as it usually is with this kind of exercise, lumping the data all together you come up with an insane range. On the other hand, if you split the data in 52 different ways, you'll get a whole different set of issues where N is not large enough to draw any conclusions - and for some states, there's simply no data at all (not to single any state out, but I'm looking at you, Wyoming).

Company view - as an experiment I've also included average data analyst salaries at all the companies that are listed on the site.

Under the Company view, I'm also leaving all the expired jobs - so you can see previously opened positions.

2. Looking back at 2023 - full year recap

Some of you may have seen my monthly "building in public" updates, where I publicly share the progress in building DataAnalyst.com, some of the challenges, observations and what's going on through my mind.

Here are some of the highlights of what was achieved, hopefully bringing value for all of you, whether you're an aspiring data analyst, or already a more seasoned professional.

If you are extra curious, you can find all 12 monthly updates on my personal blog, where I go into much more detail on building from scratch.

What do I cover in these updates?

Anything from domain names, SEO, getting authoritative backlinks, sales (or lack of), this newsletter, growth hacks and experiments and my current challenge - monetization.

Interviews

Alongside the job board, my other focus is to bring interviews with data professionals across the experience levels to share their journey, tips and advice.

Overall, we've published 8 interviews, that I believe bring different point of views, stories of growth and sharing unique paths that each individual took to navigate their careers.

There's an absolute ton to learn from these:

  • how to land data role internally within an organisation
  • the power of showcasing and reframing your experience outside the direct data analytics field
  • and how moving into more leadership roles requires more than just being a data wiz

I also want to give a shout out and say THANK YOU again to everyone who's shared their journey, their experience and thoughts with us last year.

THANK YOU - Ernie, Elijah, Tisha, Maggie, Alex, SJ, Muthalib and Ani

We already have a great lineup with fascinating insights coming up next, so keep your eyes open!

Until then, if you missed any of our previous conversations, go and have a read.

How to become a data analyst

Over the long term, I would like DataAnalyst.com to grow - not just as a job board, but also as an educational hub - from interviews with experienced professional, best practices, to advice about getting into the industry.

With that in mind, I wanted to build even further on our knowledge base of interviews, insights and resources, and put it all together in the first version of a guide to becoming a data analyst.

The first How to Become a data analyst guide covers topics such as:

  • understanding the role and responsibilities of a data analyst
  • becoming a data analyst, and what it obtains - from education, experience, to technical and soft skills
  • the well known not-so-secret hack - building your own portfolio
  • career development and salary guide (yes, our own!)
  • incorporating insights and quotes from interviews with experienced professionals

The goal is for the guide to be a living document - constantly evolving and incorporating new findings, advice and insights.
