New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) is working with the Office of Mayor de Blasio to launch the NYC Ferry. The Hornblower Company has been selected as the operator of the NYC Ferry. The service will consist of five new ferry routes in addition to the existing East River Ferry Service (transitioning into NYC Ferry), all charging a fare of $2.75 and allowing transfers between routes.

About The Opportunity

The Transportation Scheduling and Data Analyst plays a crucial role in managing and optimizing transportation processes, as well as contributing to data-driven decision-making within Hornblower’s Ferry and Transportation Division. This consists of designing processes to collect accurate -related data, which includes data on routes, vehicle performance, fuel consumption, maintenance, compliance, and other relevant elements. This role ensures that the data is accurate, up-to-date, and consistent, allowing the organization to make informed decisions and optimize transportation operations. You will collaborate with various departments to understand their data needs, create interactive dashboards, and provide insights that contribute to business objectives.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop transportation routes and schedules for the Ferry and Transportation division.
  • Optimize routes to minimize fuel consumption, reduce transit times, and maximize resource utilization, depending on the priorities of the relevant contracting agency.
  • Ensure adherence to delivery timelines and service level agreements are met.
  • Collect and compile transportation-related data from various sources, such as GPS systems, sensors, databases, and reports.
  • Analyze transportation data to identify trends, patterns, and anomalies, and develop insights to improve operations.
  • Create reports, charts, and visualizations to present data findings to senior management and stakeholders in an understandable and actionable manner.
  • Regularly review and clean transportation data to identify and correct errors, anomalies, or inconsistencies. Validate data against real-world performance and compliance standards.
  • Integrate transportation data from multiple sources and systems to create a centralized and comprehensive data repository.
  • Maintain and update transportation databases, ensuring data accuracy and integrity.
  • Develop models and algorithms to optimize transportation routes, schedules, and resource allocation.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce transportation costs and improve cost-efficiency through data analysis.
  • Ensure transportation operations comply with relevant regulations and standards by monitoring data for compliance issues.
  • Define key performance indicators (KPIs) and establish performance benchmarks for all respective departments.
  • Provide actionable recommendations and strategies based on data analysis to improve transportation efficiency and decision-making.
  • Implement and manage transportation management software and systems.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and trends in transportation management.
  • Ensure data security and privacy measures are in place to protect sensitive data.
  • Maintain documentation of data quality procedures, standards, and workflows.
  • Provide training and support to staff involved in data entry and maintenance. Collaborate with various departments to ensure data quality standards are met.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in data science, statistics, business analytics and or mathematics or a related field (master's degree may be preferred in some cases).
  • SQL database management.
  • Python coding.

Proficiency in various data analysis tools and software is essential. These may include:

  • Programming Languages: Python, R, or SQL for data manipulation and analysis.

  • Data Visualization Tools: Tableau, or Power BI for creating data visualizations.

  • Statistical Software: Such as SAS, SPSS, or Stata for statistical analysis.

  • Data Query Languages: Like SQL for database querying.

  • Data Cleaning and Transformation: Ability to clean and preprocess raw data for analysis, handling missing data, and transforming it into a usable format.

  • Statistical Analysis: Understanding of statistical methods and techniques, including hypothesis testing, regression analysis, and predictive modeling.

  • Data Visualization: Proficiency in creating clear and insightful data visualizations to communicate findings effectively via Tableau.

  • Database Management: Knowledge of database systems and the ability to work with data stored in databases.
