Data Analyst job description

Under the general direction of the Assistant Provost, the Data Analyst will support institutional research and strategic decision making by developing and improving data-driven analyses and analytic reporting. The incumbent will work with a variety of data types: student, faculty/staff, finance, financial aid to support university operational functions and reporting requirements for federal and state agencies, rankings, and surveys. The incumbent will assist in the design, development, and maintenance of databases, dashboards, data visualizations, and automated reports. The successful candidate will need a strong consultative skillset and be able to develop professional relationships with other campus units in order to understand processes and needs, and use this knowledge to identify opportunities for collaboration and project development.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a quantitative discipline, such as Data Analytics, Statistics, Information Systems, or a related area.
  • General knowledge of data pipelines, dashboard design, development, and maintenance.
  • Proven ability to apply advanced descriptive, inferential, exploratory and predictive statistical techniques, including data mining and machine learning approaches, to support decision making and extract data narratives.
  • Proficiency in programming for accessing, integrating, & managing data and analytic reporting.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work with data and people from multiple sources/departments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One to two years’ experience in data analytics and decision support in higher education setting, with specific knowledge of student related data, reporting processes, and data management. Including familiarity federal, state and rankings reporting.
  • Experience with SAS Viya/Visual Analytics/Visual Statistics, including administrative tasks.
  • Proficiency in SAS programming for data management, statistical analysis, and analytic reporting.
  • Familiarity with basic webpage development, design and management.
  • Understanding of data modeling, data warehousing, and data lake structures in a cloud-based environment.
